hiii :)

Hey everyone, my name is Chandni and I just joined FemmeToxic in May. I have never actually written a blog before, it’s my first time and I’m super excited about it!

Since this is my first entry I thought I should introduce myself a bit. I am the youngest of fifteen cousins: 14 girls and only one boy! I am ethnically Indian, but I was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. Ghana will be making their second appearance at the World Cup which starts this week in South Africa. Look out for them in their first match on Sunday!

I am interested in theatre, and feel that it is a more colourful way to send a message across. That is why this summer together with the FemmeToxic team, I will be working on a theatre piece that hopes to define to people, “Who FemmeToxic is and what we are all about.” In the past I have worked on a few plays; one which was an adaptation of the TV series Ugly Betty and which actually brings me to my next point

What attracted me to FemmeToxic was the idea that we should not rely heavily on cosmetic products; that we are beautiful even without them. Beauty is something that comes from within, it comes from the confidence that we have in ourselves. My mother always tells me, “That if you think you are beautiful, everyone else will see that too.” The media has instilled in us images of the perfect man and woman, and to some extent we have internalised this. We should never forget that everyone is beautiful in their own right and that what we think is not beautiful in one country may actually be beautiful in another. We all need to have confidence in ourselves and believe in ourselves just like Betty did!
